We have been successful in retaining our Mindful Employer status, extending it until February 2020 where it will be reviewed.

Mindful Employer is an NHS initiative run by Workways, a service of Devon Partnership NHS Trust which supports people with mental ill health to find or remain in employment.

Our Chief Executive, Monica Shafaq believes it is paramount that a charity such as The Kaleidoscope Plus Group should be a Mindful Employer.

She said: “People who have mental health problems may have experienced discrimination in recruitment and selection procedures which may discourage them from seeking employment.

“Whilst some people will acknowledge their experience of mental health problems in a frank and open way, others fear that stigma will jeopardise their chances of getting a job.

“By being a Mindful Employer demonstrates will we will not judge as given the appropriate support, the vast majority of people who have experienced mental ill health continue to work successfully as do many with ongoing problems.”

Director of Operations, Claire Dale also has the same views as our Chief Executive.

She added: “As a Mindful Employer we aim to show a positive and enabling attitude to employees and job applicants with mental ill health which will include positive statements in local recruitment literature.

“We ensure that any recruitment or occupational health check of people who have experienced mental health problems will not be discriminated against and that disclosure of a mental ill health will enable both employee and us as an employer to assess and provide the right level of support or adjustment.

“In addition, we make sure all of all line managers have information and ongoing training about managing mental health in the workplace.”
