Following today’s news that US gymnast Simone Biles has pulled out of the Tokyo Olympics to prioritise her “mental wellness over all else,” KPG Chief Executive Monica Shafaq has applauded the athlete’s decision.
In a social media post on Monday, the 30-time Olympic and World Championship medallist said she felt like she had “the weight of the world” on her shoulders and she was finding it “hard” to deal with the pressure of the Olympics.
Chief Executive Monica Shafaq said: “Stopping and saying ‘there’s something wrong, I need help’ is a big step towards looking after your mental health. For Simone Biles to do this on the world stage at the Toyko Olympics is extremely courageous and at KPG we applaud her decision to prioritise her mental wellness over everything else.
“I hope Simone’s honesty starts to change the way mental health is dealt with in sport. More needs to be done to break down the stigma and support these young athletes. It’s not about what medals they bring home, it’s about their physical and mental health.”
