Frequently Asked Questions About Mental Health First Aid Training

Mental Health First Aid training teaches you to recognise, understand, and respond to signs of mental health challenges in others. The course equips you with practical skills to provide initial support to someone experiencing a mental health crisis or developing a mental health problem until appropriate professional help is available. You’ll learn the MHFA action plan, how to listen without judgment, and how to guide individuals toward professional support.

The MHFA England Adult course is delivered over 14 hours, typically structured as two full days. These sessions can be completed within a two-week period and are available both online and face-to-face. Youth MHFA and MHFA Champion courses follow similar formats but with shorter durations.

Yes, our Mental Health First Aid courses are fully accredited by MHFA England, the only provider licensed to deliver Mental Health First Aid training in England. Upon completion, you’ll receive an official certificate and can optionally achieve the RSPH Level 3 Award in Mental Health First Aid, an internationally recognised qualification.

Our Mental Health First Aid training courses are competitively priced to make this vital training accessible. The standard MHFA England course typically costs £325 per person, though pricing may vary. We offer special rates for charities, community organisations, and group bookings. Contact us for detailed pricing and to discuss options for your organisation.

The course covers a comprehensive range of mental health topics including depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis, eating disorders, self-harm, and substance misuse. You’ll learn how to recognise warning signs, have supportive conversations, apply the MHFA action plan (ALGEE), manage crisis situations including suicidal thoughts, and signpost to appropriate professional help. The training also emphasises self-care for Mental Health First Aiders and understanding recovery and resilience.

The MHFA action plan uses the acronym ALGEE: Approach, assess, and assist with any crisis; Listen non-judgmentally; Give reassurance and information; Encourage appropriate professional help; and Encourage self-help and other support strategies. This evidence-based framework provides a clear structure for supporting someone experiencing mental health challenges.

No, Mental Health First Aid training does not qualify you to diagnose or treat mental health conditions. The course teaches you to recognize potential signs of mental health challenges, provide initial support, and guide individuals toward appropriate professional help from GPs, counselors, or mental health services. Think of it as the mental health equivalent of physical first aid.

Mental Health First Aid training is beneficial for anyone who wants to support others’ mental wellbeing. It’s particularly valuable for managers, HR professionals, teachers, healthcare workers, team leaders, colleagues, volunteers, and anyone in a caring or supervisory role. You don’t need any prior experience or qualifications—just a willingness to learn and help others.

No prior qualifications or experience are required. The course is open to anyone aged 18 or over who wants to develop their understanding of mental health and gain the confidence to support others. The training is designed to be accessible and inclusive for all learners.

While Mental Health First Aid is not currently a legal requirement in UK workplaces, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires employers to ensure employee wellbeing, which includes mental health. Many organizations are now recognizing the value of having trained Mental Health First Aiders as part of a comprehensive workplace wellbeing strategy, particularly given that mental health issues cost UK businesses approximately £56 billion annually.

While there’s no legal requirement, best practice suggests having at least one trained Mental Health First Aider per 30-50 employees, similar to physical first aid ratios. The ideal number depends on your organization’s size, shift patterns, locations, and specific needs. We can help you assess the right level of coverage for your workplace.

A Mental Health First Aider acts as a first point of contact for colleagues experiencing mental health challenges. They provide non-judgmental support, listen actively, offer reassurance and information, and guide individuals toward appropriate professional help. They also help create a more mentally healthy workplace culture and may support mental health awareness initiatives within the organisation.

Your Mental Health First Aid certification is valid for three years from the date of completion. After three years, you’ll need to complete a refresher course to renew your certification and update your knowledge with the latest mental health research and best practices.

Upon completion, you become a qualified MHFAider® and gain access to the MHFAider Support App for three years, which includes a 24/7 text support service provided by Shout, a national database of mental health services, self-care resources, and ongoing learning materials. You’ll also be invited to join the Association of Mental Health First Aiders, a supportive community with access to additional resources and insights.

Yes, refresher courses are available to update your skills and renew your certification after the initial three-year period. The refresher course is shorter than the original training and focuses on updating your knowledge and reinforcing key skills.

Kaleidoscope Plus Group offers MHFA England accredited Mental Health First Aid training throughout Birmingham and the wider Midlands region. We provide both open access courses for individuals and bespoke workplace training delivered at your organization. Our courses are available online and in-person to suit your needs.

Yes, we offer bespoke workplace Mental Health First Aid training delivered at your location or online. This is ideal for organisations wanting to train multiple staff members and can be tailored to your specific workplace context. We recommend training groups of 8-16 people for the most effective learning experience. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

Adult Mental Health First Aid focuses on supporting adults aged 18 and over, while Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed for adults who work with, support, or care for young people aged 8-18. Youth MHFA addresses the specific mental health challenges faced by children and adolescents and teaches age-appropriate intervention strategies.

The two-day Mental Health First Aider course is comprehensive training (14 hours) that fully qualifies you as an MHFAider®. The one-day MHFA Champion course is shorter and provides a foundation in mental health awareness and support skills but doesn’t result in full MHFAider® certification. Champions are ideal for creating widespread awareness, while First Aiders provide more in-depth support.
