Wellbeing sessions launched for people from LGBTQ+ Community

A leading mental health charity has launched a series of wellbeing sessions for people from the LGBTQ+ community.

The Kaleidoscope Plus Group will host informal monthly cuppa and chat sessions at its headquarters in West Bromwich where people can get support for any issues they might be facing and speak with people just like them.

Research shows people from the LGBT+ community are at a greater risk of poor mental health and wellbeing. As a minority, they may have to deal with difficult experiences like discrimination because of their sexuality or gender identity which can have an impact on an individual’s mental health.

Organiser Chris Parkes said: “We know that lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people have a higher risk of experiencing suicidal feelings, self-harm, drug and alcohol use, depression, anxiety and low self-esteem.

“Our wellbeing support service is open to anyone who wants to improve their wellbeing and reduce feelings of isolation. It will be a confidential and non-judgemental space where you can talk to us and others in a safe environment.

“By accessing this free service, you will be able to talk through any struggles you may have. You will also have the opportunity to discuss your individual needs and talk with others in similar situations to help improve your mental health and wellbeing and also make friends.

“Mental health doesn’t discriminate and neither do we.”

A 2020 report by Stonewall revealed half of LGBT people – 52 per cent – said they have experienced depression in the last year whilst one in eight LGBT people aged 18-24 – 13 per cent – said they had attempted to take their own life. More than two in five LGBT people – 42 per cent – said they felt at some point over the last year that life was not worth living.

Mr Parkes added: “Here at KPG we value and appreciate people’s uniqueness. If you need support we’re here to help. It’s important that you do not suffer in silence. You are valued and do have a place in the world.”

The charity’s LGBTQ+ wellbeing sessions start on Friday November 5 between 2-3pm and will be held at Hope Place, 321 High Street, B70 8LU.
