World autism month blog

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. People with autism can often have problems with social communication and interaction and restricted or repetitive behaviours or interests. People with ASD may also have different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention, contributing to them finding mundane and everyday tasks more difficult than others may find.

When it comes to diagnosing autism, it frequently comes through a secondary care gateway, such as through specialised health services, and not by GPs, although seeing your doctor regarding any unusual activities by your child is highly advised to get the diagnosis and treatment that they may need. Following a consultation, GPs will refer a suspected case onto secondary care where autism is normally assessed by a multidisciplinary team, as well as referrals also coming directly from those who may spend extended periods of time with your child, such as teachers and carers.

There are several different forms of Autism, with the five major types being Asperger’s syndrome, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, Kanner’s syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder.

The cause of autism comes down to genetic mutations, which are due to either inheritance or occurring spontaneously, the most common of these chromosomal conditions are more commonly known as fragile X syndrome or tuberous sclerosis. Researchers are currently exploring whether factors such as medications, viral infections, complications during pregnancy, or air pollutants play a role in triggering autism spectrum disorder.

Autism is one of the most commonly known mental disabilities in the United Kingdom, with around 2.8 million people living with the syndrome currently across the country and approximately one in every 57 children recorded on the autism spectrum. For some reason though, the syndrome is more common in males than females, with studies usually returning figures in between 3 and 5 males being recorded on the spectrum to every 1 female, a conclusion which has been left unclear as to why.

There are two separate World Autism Awareness Months, with one being in April and the second being in October, in an attempt to not only celebrate autism and help to make those who are on the spectrum feel more comfortable in being so, but also to raise awareness of autism. It is hoped that by sharing stories, understanding and acceptance of autism is improved, thus making the world friendlier for those affected by it. Statistics like this show the importance of why we should work together to create an inclusive world, where autistic people can reach their full potential.

Those who suffer from Autism tend to also have to deal with additional mental health needs, as the chances of them developing common issues such as Anxiety and Depression are also a lot higher. Anxiety tends to be extremely misunderstood and mistaken but can be a real difficulty for many autistic adults, particularly in social situations or when facing change. It can affect a person psychologically and physically, leading to quality-of-life impacts for autistic people and their families.

It is very important that autistic people learn to recognise their triggers and find coping mechanisms to help reduce their anxiety. However, many autistic people have difficulty recognising and regulating their emotions. Over one-third of autistic people have serious mental health issues and too many autistic people are being failed by mental health services. Whether you suffer with Autism or not, we’re here to help with your mental health struggles and will do all that we can to help you get through it. When it comes to mental health, you need to know that you’re not alone, and there will be someone out there to listen to you; family, friends, or Kaleidoscope – you’re never alone.
