Why Don't Men Talk About
Mental Health?

When it comes to mental health, it is important to ensure everyone is doing well mentally. However, there is a certain stigma surrounding males when it comes to their mental wellbeing, and how they are feeling. Society’s expectations and traditional gender roles often contributes to why men are less likely to discuss or seek help for their mental health problems.

Society’s expectations and traditional gender roles often contributes to why men are less likely to discuss or seek help for their mental health problems. We know that gender stereotypes about women – the idea they should behave or look a certain way, for example – can be damaging to them. But it’s important to understand that men can be damaged by stereotypes and expectations too.

Let's Normalize Talking About Men's Mental Health

Men shouldn’t feel like they have to suffer in silence. It’s not ‘Manly’ not to talk about problems. It’s amazing how much talking can help.

Did You Know?

  • Three times as many men as women die by suicide.
  • Men aged 40-49 have the highest suicide rates in the UK.
  • Men report lower levels of life satisfaction than women according to the Government’s national well-being survey.
  • Men are less likely to access psychological therapies than women: only 36% of referrals to NHS talking therapies are for men.
  • In addition, men are far more likely than women to go missing, sleep rough, become dependent on alcohol and use drugs frequently.

Lads, Let’s Chat!

Lads Chat is a weekly group with a supportive space for Men to talk about anything on their mind.

Here, there is no agenda or formal structure – it’s purely a get-together of men who are going through or have lived experience of mental ill health. There is absolutely no pressure on anyone attending to share their stories, we will of course be encouraging all the usual banter you would expect. In short, it’s a totally relaxed environment for men to feel comfortable and share experiences.

It takes place on Thursday’s 12 Noon – 2pm at Vantage Point, Blacksmith Way, West Bromwich, B70 7SX
