Charity football competition returns for fifth year in memory of former footballer Nick Mowl

For the fifth year in a row, footballers of all ages will take part in the Nick Mowl Cup, in memory of a former Solihull footballer.

41-year-old Nick Mowl was a former Solihull Moors coach and player who took his own life in May 2017.

Nick was a friend of current West Bromwich FC Senior Professional Development Phase Manager, Richard Beale and through football was known by many across the region, having played for Knowle FC, Solihull Borough, now Solihull Moors, as well as Stratford Town and Bedworth United.

The competition, named in memory of former coach and player Nick, aims to raise both awareness of mental health issues and raise vital funds for the mental health charity, The Kaleidoscope Plus Group.

The Midlands-based charity helps thousands of people across the UK each year and offers a range of services for people in need, struggling with their emotional health and wellbeing.

The open age 6-a-side football tournament is taking place on Saturday 6 May at Solihull Moors Football Club and will feature ex professional footballs. The likes of Garreth Barry, Stilyian Petrov, Chris Brunt, Adam, and James Chambers, Maik Taylor and many more are set to feature. The tournament will include things for all the family such as face painting, music, and street food.

To date the event has raised over £56,000, with this incredible amount going towards running the Kaleidoscope Plus Group charity’s text service, offering 24/7 support to people who suffer anxiety, depression or have suicidal thoughts.

On the tournament’s fifth year John Mowl, father of Nick and co-organiser of the event said: “We are delighted to be holding the Nick Mowl Cup at Solihull Moors FC on Saturday May 6th in memory of Nick. Thanks to everyone for their support and we look forward to another excellent day.”

On seeing the competition return for its fifth year Monica Shafaq, CEO of The Kaleidoscope Plus Group, said: “We are so grateful to John Mowl, David Winn and Richard Beale, the organisers of the Nick Mowl Cup who host this event to raise vital funds for our text service year on year.

“We are delighted to be taking part in the competitions fifth year as KPG celebrate our 50th anniversary. Our ethos has always been to help people on the road to feeling good again, whether that be through the support they receive or the experience they have when fundraising or volunteering for us, so to have this support yet again is truly fantastic.

“The stigma and misconceptions around suicide mean that it is often not part of our normal conversation. Our text line is a brilliant service which offers support to people in crisis free of charge, any time, where then can speak with a volunteer to help them reach a calm and safe place with a plan of how to move forward with their lives.”

To access the charity’s text line text TeamKPG to 85258 for free, confidential support, 24/7.
